Hartland High School

Our House System

At Hartland High School, our House System is a powerful way to build community. It fosters a deep sense of belonging that research suggests can improve attendance and engagement for all students. For many pupils, their house provides a sense of identity, pride, and shared purpose. It encourages friendships across year groups, which helps to reduce feelings of isolation while strengthening the wider school community.

Houses create opportunities for healthy competition and recognition both in and beyond the classroom. Success in areas such as attendance, positive behaviour, and competitions between houses allows every student to shine in different ways. This system encourages them to contribute to something bigger than themselves.

Our three houses were chosen by our students. They represent mythical creatures of the mountains and skies, reflecting our mission for every student to "climb their own personal mountain.

Our Values

Ultimately, a house system is about community rather than just competition. It reinforces our school values of work hard, be kind. It provides more opportunities to recognise and reward positive behaviour. We aim to create experiences and memories that stay with students long after they leave school.

The Three Houses

House Bjorn

Bjorn represents the spirit of the bear. The name comes from Old Norse and literally means bear. In Norse culture and mythology, the bear was one of the most powerful and respected animals. It symbolises strength, endurance, protection, and quiet authority. Bjorn represents steady power and guardianship.

House Roc

The Roc is a legendary bird of power and wonder. It is one of the most famous mythical birds in world folklore and is renowned for its immense size and majesty. Stories of the Roc originate mainly from Middle Eastern and Arabic mythology. It is portrayed as a creature so enormous that it can carry elephants in its talons and darken the sky as it flies.

House Fenrir

Fenrir is also called Fenrisúlfr. It is one of the most powerful and feared creatures in Norse mythology. As a colossal wolf born of chaos and destiny, Fenrir represents untamed strength and the inevitability of fate. Unlike noble or gentle creatures, Fenrir is raw, relentless, and impossible to ignore.

Students can contribute to their house in many ways:

  •  Achieving excellent attendance

  • Demonstrating positive behaviour in lessons

  • Participating in inter house sports events or competitions
