Hartland High School

Homework

At Hartland High School, we recognise that completing homework can have a huge positive impact on students’ learning of key knowledge, their progress and confidence.

The homework systems being planned have been designed based on scientific research into how students learn. We know that we need to rehearse things many times to be able to remember them for a long time. We also know that becoming an expert in any area requires us to learn key knowledge as a starting point.

Our homework systems are also intended to be easy for students and families to understand, so that every student is able to complete homework, contributing to their progress in school.

September 2025 homework update

If your child is in Year 11 they will be receiving three Sparx homeworks a week in English, Maths and Science. In addition to this, they will also receive homework to complete for their P6 lessons. The Sparx homework is due the day before the P6; this allows the Head of Department to check who has handed it in and organise detentions for the same day they have P6 in that subject.

If your child is in Year 10 in September they will receive three Sparx homeworks a week in English (due Thursday), Maths (due Wednesday) and Science (due on Sunday). Detentions in Year 10 will set for the day after they are due.

There will be a Year 10 study room available at lunch for students to complete their Sparx if they need to.

If your child is in Year 7, Year 8 or Year 9 they will currently only receive one Sparx Reader homework a week. Year 7 is due in Sunday ay 8pm, Year 8 is Monday at 8pm and Year 9 is due Tuesday at 8pm.  As with the older year groups, the detention is sat the day after it is due. Please note the plan is to increase the amount of homework being set in Year 7, 8 and 9 and over the course of this academic year this will increase to homeworks in Maths and Science alongside Sparx Reader.
