At Hartland High School, we recognise that completing homework can have a huge positive impact on students’ learning of key knowledge, their progress and confidence.

The homework systems being planned have been designed based on scientific research into how students learn. We know that we need to rehearse things many times to be able to remember them for a long time. We also know that becoming an expert in any area requires us to learn key knowledge as a starting point.

Our homework systems are also intended to be easy for students and families to understand, so that every student is able to complete homework, contributing to their progress in school.

September 2026 homework 

Sparx

Sparx is an online learning platform designed to help students achieve highly in English, Maths and Science. 

Students in Year 8-11 will receive three Sparx homeworkS a week in English, Maths and Science. This is the same as last year. 

Students in Year 7 will only have Sparx in English this term; after Christmas they will start Maths and after the Easter holiday, they will start Science too. We do this so that students in Year 7 have time to build up to our routines. 

Each Sparx homework takes around 30 minutes to complete. Therefore, students (except in Year 7) will spend around 90 minutes a week on their Sparx.

Year 11

Please note that in Year 11 we do send additional independent homework to help students with their revision over the school holidays. 

Students get homework to complete for their P6 in each subject which is due the next fortnight; this is typically a piece of writing such as an exam question that they have been working on in class.
