At Hartland High School, we believe that reading is one of life's greatest pleasures and one of the most powerful skills a young person can develop. Reading opens doors to opportunity, creativity and lifelong learning. We want every student to read widely, enjoy books, and develop the confidence to discuss and recommend them to others.

Our Tutor Time Reading Programme (TTRP) is a key part of achieving this vision. Four mornings each week, all students in Years 7-10 take part in a shared reading session. Tutors read aloud with clarity and expression while students follow the text in their own copy of the book. This shared experience strengthens reading fluency, expands vocabulary and comprehension, and allows students to become fully immersed in high-quality stories.

The Tutor Time Reading Programme was established across the Greenshaw Learning Trust to ensure that young people continue reading ambitious, engaging texts throughout their secondary education. By reading together, tutors are able to explain unfamiliar vocabulary, provide historical and cultural context, and draw links to learning across the wider curriculum. These discussions help students deepen their understanding while broadening their knowledge of the world.

As with all aspects of school life at Hartland High School, the programme is delivered in a calm, focused and disruption-free environment, allowing every student to enjoy uninterrupted reading time and develop positive reading habits.

Parents and carers play an important role in fostering a love of reading. We encourage families to ask students about the books they are reading, discuss characters and themes together, and celebrate reading at home.
